In Milwaukee the highway can get you anywhere in about 20 minutes like in many of the country’s cities, it’s set up so that people can zoom in from the suburbs to downtown without having to engage with Black communities. I head with XO to his mom’s crib on the North Side. Everyone shrugs and splits up, figuring it will come together later. Funny $Money is on his phone trying to lock in a video vixen. They brainstorm locations and consider who can bring the Goyard bags and other designer accessories. The cameraman keeps asking which songs they want to use, but XO and the others pay him no mind. They want to shoot two music videos tonight. When he realizes everyone is watching him, he throws up his hands and exclaims, “Hey, I’m really a hood nigga!”Īfter the meal, it’s time to get to work. Pablo, a hefty dude in a tight white tee, bleary-eyed behind his thick shades, dumps multiple tablespoons of sugar onto his rice. XO excitedly gorges and smokes until he’s nearly comatose. Phil soon brings out enough trays of food to cater a family reunion: salmon, filet mignon, ribs, mac and cheese, exotic sodas. As they gossip about Milwaukee hood drama and watch their own music videos, a friend and professional chef named Phil throws down in the kitchen. At one point Reona tapped on top of and then inside a metal bucket while Takashi riffed off her rhythms on bass.įor more on TIRELESS, check out the postshow talk with Michelle Dorrance and the performers.Nodding along at the plastic folding table where XO and Pablo are holding court is the slick-talking rapper Funny $Money, a scrawny videographer who goes by JuicedUpFilmz, and some friends. ![]() With Takashi on upright bass and Reona tapping, the pair carried on a completely improvised musical conversation, pushing their respective instruments to the limits. With all eyes on Orrach, you could hear a pin drop in the theater. With first-person narration, live music and even some boxing segments with a punching bag, Orrach shared a heartfelt interpretation of his journey from welterweight boxing champion to tap choreographer. Rhythms closed the show with Supreme Love-a reverent, yet crowd-pleasing tribute to John Coltrane. Later, Jumaane Taylor of Chicago’s M.A.D.D. Brother/sister duo Joseph Wiggan and Josette Wiggan-Freund brought tracks by Duke Ellington to life in their harmonious duet, part choreographed, part improvised. Tap and jazz music go hand in hand: OK, so this isn’t so much of a trend as an integral facet of tap history and culture, but in TIRELESS, tap dance and jazz music were fused like never before.
